2 Teens Killed In Aurelius Crash

Cayuga County 911 Center received a cellular 911 call at about 6:00 PM reporting a one car crash on Benham Road in the central Cayuga County Town of Aurelius south west of Auburn. Deputies and Aurelius Fire and Rescue responded along with Cayuga and Throop Fire Departments. The preliminary investigation by the Cayuga Country Sheriffs Department has determined the following:A 1998 Ford Taurus owned and operated by James A. Darby 17 years of age of Kies Drive in Liverpool was northbound on Benham Road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle went out of control just north of the Chamberlain Road intersection and began sliding broadside leaving the west side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a tree impacting the right center of the vehicle trapping the driver and left front seat passenger: Ryan C. Walker 19 years of age of North Division Street, Auburn. The rear seat passenger: Justin L. Walker 17 years of age (same Address as his brother Ryan) was able to exit the vehicle on his own.The driver of the car, James A Darby, died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash at 12:36 AM Sunday while undergoing treatment at University Hospital in Syracuse. When extricated from the vehicle by emergency crews Darby was airlifted to University Hospital where he underwent surgery but could not be saved.Ryan Walker died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Dr. James Dolan, Cayuga County Coroner assisted in the investigation at the scene and ordered the removal and transfer of the deceased to the Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office to continue his investigation.Justin Walker was also airlifted to University Hospital and is expected to be released following treatment. Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives conducted a total stations laser reconstruction at the scene of the crash. At this time the contributing factors appear to be excessive speed and driver inexperience.
