SCEA to picket at Port Byron School

Members of CSEA, the labor union representing non-instructional workers in the Port Byron School District, will hold an informational picket on Wednesday, November 28 at 6:30 p.m. outside the Port Byron High School at 30 Maple Avenue in Port Byron to protest the district’s proposal to contract-out student food services. The workers will protest immediately prior to the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting in the High School Library that begins at 7 p.m.The union is upset that the district is proceeding too quickly with plans to privatize their food service operations, without adequately exploring money-saving alternatives and without taking the time for appropriate public scrutiny and input.CSEA represents 15 food service workers in the district who serve an average of 750 meals a day to students. The union has told the district that correcting mismanagement issues would solve the financial issues the food service operation is facing, eliminating the need to have a private out-of-town company take over their operations. The union has also stated concerns that contracting-out the food services could lead to a decline in food service quality for students.
