Seneca Co. Tourism Grant Awards Announced

Three groups based in Seneca County have been approved for grant funding with a goal of increasing tourism. The Seneca Museum of Waterways and Industry, Cayuga Wine Trail, and “It’s a Wonderful Life” Festival in Seneca Falls were recently notified that their requests for marketing assistance had been approved. The grant program aims to increase overnight stays in Seneca County by making additional dollars available to promote events and attractions located within the county. The Seneca County Tourism department, Seneca County Chamber of Commerce, and Seneca County Advisory Committee on Tourism collaborated to develop the program, with the cooperation of the Seneca County Board of Supervisors. In September, the Supervisors authorized the appropriation of $5,000 from County Room Tax revenues for the new funding program. Non-profit organizations were eligible to receive grants ranging from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $2,500. The program requires a dollar for dollar match with funding only to be used for direct marketing and advertising expenses. A five-person panel, consisting of representatives of Seneca County’s tourism industry, reviewed applications and made recommendations to the Advisory Committee on Tourism the week of November 19th. The Committee approved the recommendations as follows; Seneca Museum of Waterways and Industry, $500; Cayuga Wine Trail, $2000; “It’s a Wonderful Life”, $2500. The Chamber is working with the County to administer the funds. Reporting with supporting documentation is required to ensure that funds are used for the intended purpose. The collaborating entities also hope to gather marketing data from the three campaigns to use in planning future advertising and promotion for the county. The Seneca County Advisory Committee on Tourism has requested that the County make funds available for additional grants in 2008. That request is being considered as part of the County’s budget review process.
