Cayuga Co. DMV Kicks Off Organ Donor Month

The Cayuga County Department of Motor Vehicles is kicking off Organ Donor Month on April 1. County Clerk Sue Dwyer is partnering with the National Kidney Foundation of Central New York, Inc. and the New York Alliance for Donation, Inc. to encourage people to become organ donors. Cayuga County Clerk Sue Dwyer said: “It just makes sense. The DMV is a great place to get people thinking about this important decision. That is why we’re joining with these organizations to educate the public on how they can make a huge impact on other people’s lives and families.”Currently more than 104,000 people in the U. S. are waiting for an organ transplant; nearly 83,000 are waiting for a kidney and many of them will wait for years. The greatest gift we can give is the promise to save or enhance someone else’s life with organs and tissues that we no longer need. If you can, you might also consider becoming a living donor. Every day, 18 people die while waiting. Let’s “End the Wait!” for those on the national waiting list and give the gift of life.“During the month of April we will be providing promotional items from the several different organizations including the NY Alliance and forms for people who sign up to become a donor. It only takes a few minutes to sign a form and your decision today can save a life tomorrow!”“Our kick off is April 1 at 11 a.m. at the DMV office in the Cayuga County Office Building, 160 Genesee Street in Auburn. On April 1st representatives from the National Kidney Foundation of Central New York will be in attendance along with their Kidney Mascot-Sydney the Kidney. The DMV organ mascot, Happy the Heart will be at the DMV office throughout the month of April to remind people to sign up to be a donor. Anyone can sign up to be a donor and it’s a very easy process. The public is invited to visit us, ask questions and complete a donor card or sign your NYS driver’s license. Won’t you please join us! “I want to commend our DMV Supervisor Shereen Androsko and the entire DMV staff for their enthusiasm and help in organizing this month-long initiative” Dwyer said. For more information on organ donation, please contact the National Kidney Foundation of CNY at (315) 476-0311 and Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network at 1-800-810-5494, or visit http://www.nyhealth.gov/donatelife.
