Man found shot in garage in Jerusalem

Yates County 911 received a cell phone call at approx 10:04 AM and the male caller said that there was a dead body in his garage and the dispatcher lost the connection with the caller, but through enhanced 911 GPS technology Yates Co. 911 dispatchers plotted the calls location to a residence on the Guyanoga Valley Road in the Town of Jerusalem. Upon identifying the residence dispatchers called the residences land-line and spoke with a female who reported hearing a gun shot. Upon arrival Sheriffs Deputies and Investigators blocked the highway and had EMS and ALS as well as Branchport FD First Responders stage in Branchport, NY, and then escorted a woman and two teens to safety in a sheriff’s car away from the home. According to Sheriff Spike who was on the scene “Not getting any answer to call-backs to the cell phone armed Yates deputies cautiously advanced on the residence and located a man suffering a shotgun wound in the garage of the home still alive with a major neck area injury.” With the scene safe EMS was sent to the scene and the man was taken by PY Ambulance to landing zone at the Penn Yan airport and placed on Mercy Flight helicopter and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery. Investigation shows that the original caller to 911 was the same 61 yr old man resident of that address who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sheriff Spike said “I praise the work of the on duty 911 dispatchers, and the several deputies on the scene who used their training in response to this gunshot incident for there are a lot of unknowns.” Investigation continues. The Sheriff further stated “The Sheriff’s Office normally does not release information on these types of self-inflicted incidents, but several calls from area residents about a shooting prompts us to let the community know that this was an isolated incident and that Branchport community residents are safe.”
