Town Board discusses former clerk’s arrest

Fayette Town Board members discussed the case of former Town Clerk/Tax Collector Nancy Knight at Thursday’s meeting.Seneca County sheriff’s deputies arrested KnightJuly 11 and charged her with third-degree grandlarceny, a felony, and official misconduct, a misdemeanor. She is accused of stealing at least $3,100 in cash from 2011 property tax payments made earlier this year. The town has hired a privateauditor to determine if additional money is missing.Town Supervisor Cynthia Lorenzetti saidthe town clerk’s office was in disarray, and that additional clerical help was hired to organize therecords. She stated thetotal cost to the town willbe around $7,000. The audit could reveal more than $3,100 is missing.“The police investigation is complete, and it’s in thedistrict attorney’s hands now,” Lorenzetti said,praising the work of sheriff ’s department Lt. JohnCleere. ”There is some evidence that people wereallowed to pay their regular bill late without late fees added, depriving the town of that revenue.”Before her arrest, Knight filed Republican Party petitions to run for re-election; thus, her nameremained on today’s primary ballot. She is opposedby Marleen Hubbs, whom the board appointed astown clerk/tax collector following Knight’s resignation
