Teen dies in Skaneateles Lake scuba accident

Sheriff David Gould reports that the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death which appears to be the result of a scuba diving accident.On Sunday at 11:00 am, Emergency crews responded to a 911 call on N. Glen Haven Rd. in the Town of Niles regarding a scuba diving accident. The victim was transported to Cortland Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.The preliminary investigation reveals that the victim, Brandon Finch, age 16 of Bridgeport, was scuba diving in the south end of Skaneateles Lake along with two adult divers, Carl Hoyt, age 33 of Bridgeport, and Theodore Garlock, age 23 of Syracuse. According to Hoyt and Garlock, Finch began rapidly swimming toward the surface from 60 feet of water. Finch became unresponsive before reaching the surface and was then recovered and brought to the surface by the other two divers. The adult divers began CPR while summoning EMS.Finch was certified in diving at that depth few months ago.Both Hoyt and Garlock are certified divers with years of experience. The autopsy is being performed by the Broome County Medical Examiner’s Office. The actual cause of death has not been determined as of yet and at this time it is unknown what caused Finch to attempt to ascend so quickly. The investigation is continuing.
