Snow Belts Get Cranking; Quiet Locally

A storm system will move through the Mid Atlantic today, bringing some morning snow showers to the Finger Lakes. These snow showers will be light and will not put down more than a fresh dusting of snow.More importantly, this system will bring in some colder air on westerly winds. Temperatures will not move much today before dropping into the teens overnight. As this cold air moves in, lake effect snows are expected to develop to the east of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. This is a classic set up for the Tug Hill to get pounded…and for the Finger Lakes to remain quiet. The lake effect will get going this afternoon and especially overnight, but nothing more than a few flurries should be expected for the majority of the Finger Lakes. There may be a belt across the central/southern Finger Lakes that see a brief squall or two off Lake Erie. This would likely be in places like Ithaca or Penn Yan. An inch of snow might be able to be squeezed out in these areas, but the vast majority of the area will not see that. When will the Finger Lakes get back into the action? Wednesday afternoon and evening. A small system will move through with some light snow, followed by a brief wind shift that should bring some Lake Ontario lake effect into our region. It will be short lived, however, with lake effect moving back to our north for Thursday.
