Dangerous, bitter cold over the Finger Lakes

The strong winds and bitter cold we have been talking about is here. Temperatures dropped from the mid and upper teens back into the single digits. Some areas will get to below zero. The wind is howling with frequent gusts over 30 mph, making it feel much colder. This is just the beginning. By the Tuesday morning, temperatures will be well below zero for most areas with the winds continuing strongly. Wind chills will get to or below -30º for a time, leading to dangerous, life threatening conditions. Frostbite can occur in 10 minutes or less with these wind chills.Temperatures will ‘warm’ back to just above 0º Tuesday afternoon, but the wind will keep the wind chill near -20º (frostbite in 30 minutes). Even Wednesday morning will likely still have wind chills in the -15 to -20 range. In addition to this portions of western New York and east of Lake Ontario are dealing with a literal lake effect blizzard as heavy snow is also falling. Buffalo, along with the rest of Erie, Genesee and Wyoming counties are under a rare BLIZZARD WARNING.Little snow is expected outside of the lake effect.
