Sheriff: Sterling man tried to lure minors on Craigslist for sex

SatchuraThe Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 44-year-old Sterling man in connection with a Child Luring investigation. Members of the Sheriff’s Office recently became aware of a subject advertising on Craigslist that he was seeking sexual contact with minors. The subject was also posting lewd images. On Wednesday, a detective from the Sheriff’s Office, posing as a 15-year-old boy, began conversing via Craigslist with the subject who eventually requested a meeting, for the purpose of a sexual encounter, with the 15 year old along with a 13-year-old friend of the 15-year-old. The meet was set for yesterday afternoon in a public park in the Village of Fair Haven. The subject intended to meet there, and then transport the children to a more private location nearby. An undercover Deputy Sheriff was placed in the park with supporting undercover personnel as well as arrest teams located nearby. At approximately 5:00 pm the undercover deputy was approached by a male in a vehicle who acknowledged that he was in fact the person who had scheduled the meet. After a short conversation with the deputy the suspect recognized that the deputy was not a 15-year-old and drove away from the scene. The arrest team then took the subject into custody without incident. A laptop computer and other physical evidence were secured from the suspect’s vehicle. The investigation and interview of the subject following the arrest revealed that child pornography will be found on the computer upon its analysis. Charged: Robert J. Stachura, age 44, last known address of 14890 Sterling Valley Road in Sterling. Stachura is currently charged with Attempted Disseminating Indecent Material to a Minor (felony) relating to the nature of the conversation via Craigslist. The charge is “attempted” due to the fact that the other party was actually a Detective rather than an actual minor. Stachura was arraigned in the Town of Sterling Court and remanded to the Cayuga County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond. Further charges pending the outcome of the investigation and further consultation with the Cayuga County District Attorney. The Sheriff’s Office is also in contact with the US Attorney’s Office in regard to the potential filing of Federal charges against Stachura.Below is a photo of an identical vehicle to the one Stachura drives.
