W-FL Monday: Lyons storms back to edge Red Creek

One of the games of the year in Wayne County took place on a cold, snowy evening in Red Creek last night as the Lyons Lions handed Jake Slobe’s Red Creek Rams their first loss of the season, 56-54. The victory tightens up an already interesting Wayne County League this season pulling the Lions to within one game of Red Creek and North Rose-Wolcott, who narrowly defeated Gananda tonight. Red Creek has never won the Wayne County League title in their school’s history. After jumping out to a 9-0 lead out of the gate, Red Creek led by 12 at the end of the first half. The Rams scored the final four points of the half in the final 2 seconds. Lyons would storm back out of the locker room to cut the Rams’ lead to 41-37 after three quarters to play. Lyons leading scorer Damon Hunter picked up his 3rd foul on a technical near the end of the third, and his 4th with six minutes left in the game. Deondre McDonald took over for the Lions down the stretch hitting a pair of big threes and Lyons was able to hold on for the two point win. Hunter would finish with 15 points and an impressive 12 assists, many to teammate Chris Peay who led Lions with 16 points. Red Creek’s 1,000 point scorer Jake Slobe added 20 more points to his career total along with 9 rebounds and sophomore PG Nick Klein had 16 in the loss. The rematch between Red Creek and Lyons will be broadcast live on FL1 Sports on Tuesday, February 3rd.Also tonight, Dundee shocks Penn Yan in a Yates County rivalry game, North Rose-Wolcott beat Gananda by 3 points to move into a tie for first place in Wayne County, and Mynderse improved to 8-2 after defeating Honeoye by 12.
