Hunter lifts Lyons to 17th sectional title

After giving up 29 first quarter points to a hot shooting RCMCS squad, the Lyons Lions would climb back behind another huge postseason performance by senior point guard Damon Hunter to defeat the Royals 80-74 and capture the 2015 Section V Class C3 championship.The title is the school’s 17th sectional championship, second only to East High (22) in Section V. The title is also the second for 5th year head coach Zac Young.The Lyons were able to withstand 5 first quarter three pointers from RCMCS, an independent charter school (Rochester Career Mentoring Charter School), thanks in part to a pair of three pointer by junior Adam Vanbuskirk. Jordan Aumell scored 4 early point to keep the Lyons within reach as well.Once the Lions survived the bad start, Damon Hunter took over eventually finishing with 30 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. It was his third straight postseason game with over 30 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists earning him the Class C3 tournament’s Most Valuable Player award. He also won the MVP award in his sophomore season.Also huge for the Lyons was senior big man Chris Peay who scored a season high 20 points and pulled down 10 big rebounds.Adam Vanbuskirk scored 12 points, Jordan Aumell finished with 6, senior Nick Fera scored 5 to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Rounding out the Lyons scoring was Deondre McDonald with 4 points and sophomore Daryn Carswell with 3.Lyons LionsThe Lyons will play again on Monday at a site to be determined in the Class C3 state qualifying mini-tournament’s first round.You can relive the Lyons victory with our gamecast video below.
