83 cattle lost in Fayette barn inferno

Eleven fire departments responded to a barn fire located at 2908 Kuneytown Road in the Town of Fayette in the early morning hours on Wednesday. Deputies report that a barn owned by 26-year-old Larry M. Hurst caught fire and quickly spread.The barn was a total loss and along with equipment and livestock it is estimated that the total damage to be over one million dollars. 83 head of cattle, multiple farm equipment items and multiple bales of hay were lost in this fire.Fayette Fire Department responded to this fire and was assisted by all 11 fire departments in Seneca County. North Seneca, South Seneca and Finger Lakes Ambulance also assisted on scene.Two injuries were reported both being firefighters. The first injury was of heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation; the male was transported by North Seneca to Geneva General where he was treated. The second injury was a minor neck injury cause by a fire hose; Finger Lakes ambulance transported the male to Geneva General where he was treated.The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but does not appear to be suspicious.Photos by Rachel Burkholder
