4th annual Literacy Volunteers Spelling Bee results

They made it past gesundheit, lobscouse, ganache and somniferous. It took nearly 20 rounds and two hours for the Minus One Team of Romulus teachers to best a team of Tutor Bees to win the fourth annual Literacy Volunteers Spelling Bee.Minus One correctly spelled bioluminescent. After the Tutor Bees, consisting of Literacy Volunteers tutors Claire Berke, Anne James and Maureen Conklin missed on patronymic, Minus One’s Liz Montesanto and Karen Zona spelled it correctly and then added ignominious for the win. The teachers said they decided to enter with just two members when no other teachers would step up. They received $200 first prize.Second place team of Tutor Bees Maureen Conklin, Claire Berke and Anne James; third place team from Waterloo Rotary, Suzanne Sinclair, Jared Wright and Doris Wolf, and first place team Minus One, Liz Montesano and Karen Zona.The Literacy Volunteers tutors worked hard for their second place $100 winnings, said Literacy Volunteers program director Kaaren Gerlach. “They held weekly study sessions to go over the words. They had most of them down pat. I think there were about 70 words they had questions on.”Waterloo Rotary’s third place team of Suzanne Sinclair, Jared Wright and Doris Wolf admitted they hadn’t studied that much. They missed on zigzageddness to claim $50 for the club’s literacy programs. Other teams were from Seneca Falls Rotary, Friends of Seneca Falls Library and Haflinger Golden Oldies.Gerlach said the proceeds from the spelling bee will help purchase materials for Literacy Volunteers tutors to use in teaching reading, math and citizenship courses as well as high school diploma programs. Financial donations are gratefully received to help the program purchase books and other supplies for students, enhancing the program, said Arline Marino, Executive Director.
