Ithaca Police seize several assault rifles during search

In Ithaca a traffic stop turned into a major search and recovery effort, as Ithaca Police turned up seven illegal firearms inside a vehicle near the intersection of West Seneca and Albany Street. The Ithaca Police Department reports that on Monday afternoon, at approximately 5:03 pm Corbin D. Whyte, 31, of Ithaca was arrested following a traffic stop at West Seneca and Albany Street in the city.Sgt. Necheporek reports that when during the stop police learned of his active arrest warrant, which led to Whyte being arrested and his vehicle being impounded. Police noted the smell of burned marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, as well as what appeared to be a handgun in the side pocket of the driver’s side door. After the vehicle was impounded, police say they applied for a search warrant — which was later granted. When a complete search of the vehicle was executed at the Ithaca Police Department, a number of firearms were found in the process:– One fully-loaded .40 caliber, semi-automatic handgun.- One fully-loaded .380 caliber, semi-automatic handgun.- Two revolvers- One twelve-gauge shotgun.- One .223 caliber AR15 assault rifle, with two fully-loaded 30 round magazines, as well as one fully-loaded 10 round magazine.- One suppressed .22 caliber assault rifle.In addition to the firearms, a number of other items were found in the vehicle. Hundreds of rounds of various handgun, rifle, and shotgun ammunition — numerous pill bottles filled with various scheduled controlled substances, as well as more than $1,000 in cash — were all found inside the vehicle during the search.Whyte was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, one could of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class B felony, as well as a number of other charges — which are currently pending investigation.More charges are likely to follow.Whyte was arraigned in Ithaca City Court and was remanded to the Tompkins County Jail without bail. He will appear at a later date to answer the charges.
