Sonnenberg announces big changes to Orchid Show

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park’s annual Orchid Show, which is usually held in early March, has a new name, expanded focus, and a new date this year. The show, now called the Spring Wildflower & Orchid Show, has moved to late April in order to include the early spring beauty of the park that guests rarely see as well as the always popular orchids.For this show, Sonnenberg will open its greenhouses to the public in celebration of its wonderful orchid collection. Flower fans of all ages will delight in exotic blooms showcased in Sonnenberg’s working, 100 year-old Lord & Burnham greenhouse complex. But the breathtaking beauty does not stop there. Sonnenberg’s more than 50 acres is sprinkled with eclectic collection of spring blooming trees, shrubs, bulbs, and perennial plants. The entire park including the mansion and gardens will be open for this event to allow visitors to partake of this spring spectacle.On Saturday, educational seminars on orchid care will be offered at 11 AM and 2 PM and guided wildflower walks in the Rock Garden will be at 10:30 AM and 1 PM with the Canandaigua Botanical Society. Sonnenberg’s Executive Director David Hutchings will present his very popular Principles of Garden Design talk on Sunday at 2 PM. On Friday, guests can take advantage of special orchid re-potting services offered by Sonnenberg’s horticultural staff- a donation for these services is requested. Wine tastings from the Finger Lakes Wine Center will be available on Saturday from Noon – 4 PM and Sunday from 1 PM – 4 PM. Activities will be available throughout the entire event for families. Wine as well as a variety of orchids and orchid supplies plus gift items will be on sale in the Sonnenberg Gift Shop for visitors to take home.The Spring Wildflower & Orchid Show will be held Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24 from 10 AM – 5 PM each day. General admission to the event is $10 per person, $5/Ages 4-16, and free for ages 3 and under and will be held at Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park which is located at 151 Charlotte Street in Canandaigua, NY. This string quartet, featuring Patricia Sunwoo, David Brickman, Melissa Matson and Mimi Hwang, will play in the Sonnenberg mansion’s Great Hall at 4 pm Saturday April 23. Admission to the concert is separate fee: $20/general admission and $15/Sonnenberg members.
