Geneva announces winners of MAP grants

The City of Geneva is proud to announce the winners of this year’s Microenterprise Assistance Program (MAP) grants. The grants, which totaled $175,000, were awarded to ten businesses within the City of Geneva. Grants for five new businesses were awarded to Geneva Gelato, Serendipity Boutique, Drawings, Finger Lakes Board Supply and Buckley Projects. “Thank you to the City for allowing me to fulfill a childhood dream and to fill this current void in the skateboard industry. This will not only give kids more of a reason to get out there and skateboard, but it will also help parents shop locally to fulfill those needs,” Joe Marone owner of Joe’s Hots and Finger Lakes Skateboarding. Also, five Business expansion grants were awarded to Cracker Factory, Simple Sweets Bakery, Lake Drum Brewing, El Morro Restaurant, and Bubble Tea Cafe. “I am amazed, blessed, and fortunate that we received this grant, not only for myself but for my team. It is going to empower us to do more to make us an even bigger success,” said Linda Viertel, Owner of Serendipity Boutique.Eighteen applications with projects totaling over $500,000 were submitted by the April 28th due date. Applications were scored and ranked by the MAP Review Committee with financial feasibility and value to the City being considered. Committee members included representatives from the Geneva Business Improvement District, Geneva Local Development Corporation, Geneva Revolving Loan Fund, Geneva Industrial Development Agency, Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce and City staff. The City intends to apply for additional Microenterprise Assistance Funds through the 2016 Consolidated Funded Application. Pre-Applications are available by contacting the City of Geneva at 315-828-6585 or emailing ccb@geneva.ny.us. The MAP is funded through the Community Development Block Grant Program which is federally-funded. The purpose of the Program is to provide training and financial assistance to entrepreneurs, start-up businesses, and “relatively new” existing businesses that will create entrepreneurial opportunities and jobs in the City of Geneva.
