Veterans receive Backyard Makeover at the Canandaigua VA

On July 19, a celebration will take place to open a new Veteran basketball court at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center in courtyard #1 at 1:00 pm. Mike Cooney and the Boot Campaign have teamed up to show their gratitude to our nation’s military and Veterans by giving away six backyard makeovers to active duty, retired military service members or families of the fallen. Veterans at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center are one of the six “Backyard Makeover” recipients chosen and are receiving a new $25,000 basketball court. “This makeover was chosen targeting the VA location to touch the lives of more than just one Veteran,” shared Mike Cooney. “We hope that many Veterans will enjoy the basketball court and Veterans in the community will also be reached by this donation.” Courtyard #1 is the backyard to numerous Veterans in outpatient programs, the Health Fitness Center and Gerofit program, the Move program, the Adult Day care program, Community Living Center residences and the Domiciliary program.Mike Cooney and his team coordinated the collection of all of the materials used to build the court to include asphalt, painting and the hoops. Mike met and collaborated with Louise Motyka, VA Voluntary Service, Hank Riegel, Recreation Therapy Program Manager, and Eric Smith, Construction and Maintenance Manager, to develop a useful project for Veterans. “We hope that many Veterans will enjoy the basketball court and Veterans in the community will also be reached by this donation,” said Mike Cooney.
