Rideout was murdered in his basement, authorities say

Update: July 27

Investigators have now confirmed that Craig Rideout was killed in the basement of his Penfield home. While no formal murder charges have been handed down against anyone, Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike confirmed the news on Wednesday. Friends of Rideout say that he was blindsided by the divorce he was moving through, as well as the custody battle that followed with his estranged wife – Laura Rideout – who was charged with several counts of evidence tampering.

Update: July 25

Investigators say they have located the 2010 Honda Odyssey, which had been missing since deputies began the investigation into Craig Rideout’s death. The vehicle was located at the Bushnell’s Basin Park & Ride Lot located off of State Route 96, near the Route 490 interchange.

Original Report: July 25

Arrests have been made and the scenes in Jerusalem, Penfield, and Mendon Ponds Park have been connected.

While a ton still remains a mystery – investigators say they are getting closer to formally charging someone in the murder of Penfield resident Craig Rideout.

His estranged wife and two sons have all been charged.

Laura Rideout, the estranged wife of Craig Rideout who went missing July 20th around 11 pm, was charged with burglary, as well as evidence tampering. Investigators also say that Laura had removed evidence from the scene in Penfield, which was Craig Rideout’s home. They say blood and other potentially incriminating evidence was wiped from the scene with acidic cleaning materials, which could have linked Laura to the scene.

Craig’s two children, Collin and Alex Rideout were charged with similar felonies for destroying, or tampering with evidence. Laura Rideout posted bail Friday afternoon, while her two children posted bail on Monday. All were held on $25,000 cash bail at the Monroe County Jail.

Investigators say that Rideout’s body was discovered in the Town of Jerusalem, which is located near Penn Yan in Yates County. On Friday, the Monroe and Yates County Sheriff’s Offices held a joint press conference, highlighting the charges against the three family members of Rideout.

The scene in Jerusalem, as well as the scene in Penfield were the first to be linked. Investigators linked the scene at Devil’s Bathtub, or Mendon Ponds Park – to the crime when a bag of items, which included leather gloves and acidic cleaning solutions was found in a body of water. Investigators say that Craig’s children, Collin and Alex, threw the bag into the water – hoping to eliminate evidence.

A great deal remains unknown, but investigators say that they are getting closer to formal murder charges. It’s unclear at this point, who, or how many individuals might be charged in the murder of Craig Rideout, but it remains clear that investigators are working overtime to determine the circumstances around his death.
