Tompkins drafts law to divide sheriff duties

Tompkins County lawmakers have drafted a local law to divide sheriff duties and appoint a commissioner of police. Any change from an elected position to an appointed position would have to be approved by Tompkins County voters in a referendum. While it’s a controversial idea in concept, it’s something that has been considered in other places.
