It was a busy week in the FingerLakes1.com newsroom, as quickly developing news stories turned tragic – highlighting a number of concerns those living in the Finger Lakes have expressed. Whether it involved swimmer safety, concerns around heroin, or a recent uptick in car accidents – there was plenty going on.

Swimmer drowns in Cayuga Lake near Myer’s Park
The week started with tragedy in the Finger Lakes, as a swimmer on August 21 went missing around Myer’s park in Lansing. While crews worked tirelessly to find the swimmer, those rescue efforts fell short after the man was located – deceased – at about 11:30 pm on Sunday, August 22. Deputies said that the original report came in around 3:30 pm on Saturday. The victim was identified as Timothy J. Butler, 58, of McGraw, New York.
Police issue warning about sale of controlled substances in region
One of the most-read stories from the week was one regarding a man, who had been arrested after the sale of a controlled substance in Penn Yan. The Penn Yan Police Department also followed two major arrests by announcing that a trend had developed – with growing concerns around the contents of the drugs being sold on the street.
Wayne Co. Sheriff’s Deputy involved in car accident
The middle of the week was met with concern, as a Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of High St. and Wayne Center Rose Rd. in the Town of Rose. The deputy was struck by an oncoming vehicle after they failed to yield the right of way. Both parties were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Mettler Toledo plans exit from NY; taking 185 jobs with it
An announcement from Mettler Toledo at the end of the week, spawned a lot of concern over the future of manufacturing in the region. The company announced that they would be relocating from Dryden to an area just outside of Tampa, Florida. The company also said that it would be taking the 185 jobs the facility has with it. While those who work for Mettler are said to be getting the first opportunity at the jobs in Florida, it remains to be seen if that will pan out.
String of serious accidents in Cayuga County on Saturday
A string of three serious car accidents in Cayuga County this weekend left emergency crews stretched thin. An accident around 3:30 pm in the Town of Brutus, where a vehicle went off the road – rolling several times – left three people hospitalized. One was airlifted to University Hospital with serious injuries. Two more accidents, which involved multiple vehicles and occurred at 9:30 pm and 10:30 pm respectively in Auburn and Sennett, left multiple others being transported to area hospitals. At least one from those two accidents was airlifted to University Hospital.
