Helming defeats Rayburn in GOP primary race for 54th

Ontario County’s absentee ballot count in the 54th state Senate race took several hours Thursday as commissioners and staff worked their way through more than 200 absentee ballots.

Watching closely were attorneys and supporters for candidate Pam Helming and supporters for candidate Floyd Rayburn, who also watched. In the end, with three contested ballots headed to the judge for determination, Rayburn picked up 113 votes to Helming’s 91.

Rayburn now trails Helming in the race for the GOP spot on the November ballot by 205 votes.
