Ovid resident arrested for welfare fraud; charged with multiple felonies

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on October 5th around 1:10 pm investigators arrested Lois J. Stearns, 60, of Ovid on several charges stemming from an investigation into welfare fraud.

Investigators say that Stearns was charged with grand larceny in the third degree, two counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, welfare fraud in the third degree and misuse of food stamps — all Class D felonies.

Stearns allegedly failed to disclose income to the Seneca County Division of Human Services and unlawfully received public benefits. Stearns was arraigned in Tyre Town Court and will answer the charges at a later date.
