Ontario County wants more for war against algae

Toxic blue-green algae this year overpowered 70 New York lakes and 52 ponds, striking Owasco Lake so bad health officials found toxins in drinking water headed to the city and town of Auburn. “The region truly stands at a crossroads,” Finger Lakes Land Trust Executive Director Andrew Zepp said when the land trust released a report this month calling for a $100 million investment to fight threats with blue-green algae at the forefront. Canandaigua, Honeoye and Seneca lake have all fallen victim — Honeoye for years, Canandaigua and Seneca for the first time last year.
