Pair of Penn Yan residents arrested on drug charges after search of car, apartment

The Penn Yan Police Department arrested two males after a traffic stop on Main Street in Penn Yan on Friday at about 8:34 am.

Officers say that they were called to State Route 14A and Benton Center for the report of a possible drunk driver traveling towards Penn Yan. An officer observed a 2001 Nissan traveling southbound in the northbound lane of North Main Street, which resulted in the officer needing to drive off of the roadway to avoid being struck.

The vehicle was stopped a short distance later and the driver — Ryan G. Thomas, 19, of Penn Yan and Collin D. Lackey were found to be in possession of marijuana.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed that the men were in possession of hypodermic syringes, Suboxone, Methylphenidate and marijuana.

Thomas was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, criminal possession of a hypodermic syringe, unlawful possession of marijuana — failure to keep right, and failure to notify DMV of an address change.

He was arraigned in Penn Yan Village Court and remanded to the Yates County Jail on $500 cash bail or $1,000 secured bond.

Lackey was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree. He was released to appear at a later date.

Additional charges are pending for both males. According to police, a search of Thomas’ apartment revealed other drug related items.
