Capable surveyor just got it wrong in Yates County

The line defining the eastern boundary of the vast Genesee Tract (6 million acres, give or take) was drawn during the summer of 1788. When making a large survey such as this one, the first line is drawn along the boundary between known and unknown lands. This is called the base line of the survey, and from this a grid of lines is drawn (in this case at 6-mile intervals) marking off smaller tracts for sale.
