Wayne County man sentenced for aggravated vehicular assault

The Wolcott man who was allegedly drunk when he drove his boat into the break wall between Sodus Bay and Lake Ontario in June was sentenced to serve two and a half to five years in prison. The sentence was handed down to Lawrence E. Wiegele, 49, on Thursday morning in Wayne County Court after he pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated vehicular assault, a class C felony, for the wreck that caused serious injury to a passenger on the boat.

According to Wayne County Assistant District Attorney Christopher Bokelman, an investigation showed that Wiegele was speeding when he piloted the 26-foot pleasure craft into the cement break wall at around 11 p.m. June 11. Lab results further determined that his blood alcohol content was 0.16 percent, the prosecutor said.
