Lyons win HOF Classic, J-D beats Newark in Waterloo

Waterloo hosted the inaugural Hall of Fame Classic this weekend at Waterloo High School and the second night of the event on Saturday featured three games that were streamed live on FL1 Sports.

In the opener, a stand-alone showcase game between the Newark Reds and Section III’S Jamesville-Dewitt, it was all J-D early. After opening up a 24-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Red Rams would cruise to a 63-49 win. Buddy Boeheim led the scoring for J-D with a game-high 24 points. Taylor Clements would lead Newark with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Reds open their season at 0-1.

In the consolation game of the tournament, Penn Yan would open up a big first half lead and hold on for a 50-42 win over host Waterloo. Penn Yan point guard Desmond Battin would score 18 points to go along with 3 rebounds and 4 assists while teammate Dylan Stape would score 15 to go along with 7 rebounds. For Waterloo, Jarrett Benedicks would finish with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in the loss. The Indian’s Jarrod Hay-Snyder would score 15 including three 3-pointers. Waterloo falls to 1-2 on the season while Penn Yan improved to 1-1.

In the championship game, Coach Zac Young’s Lyons Lions would roll to a 73-48 win over Weedsport behind 23 points from sophomore Kerel Kelly and 16 points from Justice Smith and Devin Franklin. Senior Ben Rockefeller would dish out 5 assists and pull down a team-high 10 rebounds. Devin Franklin brought the house down with a break-away one-handed dunk late in the first quarter. Weedsport was led by Jeff DeJohn’s 15 points and Jake O’Connor’s 12 point effort in the loss. Lyons improved to 4-0 on the season.

The All-Tournament Team included Penn Yan’s Battin, Weedsport’s DeJohn and O’Conner, and Lyons’ Justice Smith and Devin Frankin. Sophomore Kerel Kelly was named Tournament MVP.
