Lake effect snow makes travel difficult entering holiday weekend; Warnings, Advisories active in FLX

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Northern Cayuga, Onondaga and Wayne counties in the Finger Lakes region ahead of a lake effect snow event, which will dump anywhere from 8 to 14 inches of snow on those counties.

The warning is in effect until 4 am. In addition to the snowfall, extensive blowing and drifting are expected as winds push out of the northwest at 20 to 30 mph. Gusts could exceed 40 mph in some places. Temperatures are likely going to hang in the upper-20s or lower-30s, which combined with the wind will make wind chills dip into the low-teens.

Travel is expected to be treacherous in the warned area. Those who will be making their way through the warned area are advised to take extra time, or avoid it altogether, according to the National Weather Service.

A Lake Effect Snow Advisory remains in effect for Southern Cayuga and Monroe counties, which includes the City of Auburn. Forecasters with the National Weather Service say that anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow will be likely in the advised area. The heaviest of snow will likely enter the advised area between 5 am and 8 am on Friday. The advisory remains in effect until 4 am.

Those traveling in the Finger Lakes over the next two days should pay close attention to local forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Expect blowing snow throughout the region. Quickly changing visibility will be a primary concern with this event, as is typically the case with lake effect snow.

Weather forecasters don’t know nothing as to what comes. Especially locals ones. I’d rather listen to the weather in Alaska.
