C-S, Newark score impressive wins in I-90 Holiday Showcase

Friday was a banner day for Wayne-Finger Lakes boys basketball two of the top area teams headed west to compete in the I-90 Holiday Showcase in Buffalo and came home with impressive wins. Clyde-Savannah, a Class C3 school, edged Class A Buffalo East by a score of 68-67. The Newark Reds handled East Aurora 52-44. East Aurora entered the game as the 6th ranked Class B team in New York State.

Clyde-Savannah controlled the game through the first three quarters leading by 13 at halftime and 8 at the end of the third. Buffalo East’s Willard Anderson brought his squad back with a heroic 20 point fourth quarter. Still, C-S would lead by five with just 10 seconds left in the contest. Anderson then hit a quick three and after a timeout Clyde-Savannah’s Dru Carnevale would hit a pair of free throws with just four seconds left. On the game’s final possession, Anderson would bank in a desperation three pointer after being fouled on the shot. He would head to the free throw line and miss the game tying free throw and Buffalo East would miss an open put-back at the buzzer as the Golden Eagles survive with a one-point victory.

Dru Carnevale led the scoring for C-S with 23 points including 4 three pointers. Junior point guard Derrick Chance scored 11 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Try Kanaley and Jaret Murray added 10 each and Dereck Cobb scored 10 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. Murray had 6 rebounds as Clyde-Savannah improves to 6-2 on the season. Buffalo East’s Willard Anderson finished with 36 points including 8 three pointers.

Newark 52 vs E. Aurora (Sec 6) 44

The Newark Reds never trailed in their contest against NYS Class B 6th ranked East Aurora and used an impressive 32 minute defensive performance to win 52-44. The Reds allowed just 19 points from the field in the win as East Aurora scored 25 of their 44 points from the free throw line in what was an extremely physical game that included multiple flagrant fouls.

Newark built a 31-22 halftime lead knocking down 3 three pointers in the final minutes of the second quarter after East Aurora went on a 9-0 run to cut an early Newark lead to four. Newark held on to the lead through three quarters, 39-31, before closing the game up eight.

Senior point guard Nate Beard led the scoring for Newark with 13 points to go along with 7 steals and 4 rebounds. Taylor Clements and Brian Sharp scored 12 apiece and Logan Moynihan had 12. Newark has now won five straight to improve to 5-3 on the season. The loss was the second of the year for East Aurora who moves to 6-2.
