If you’re a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, America’s love ’em/hate ’em team, or “Star Wars,” you might want to head down to the Wayne County Humane Society’s 14th annual Sweetheart Auction, which takes place at noon on Sunday, Jan. 29 at the Palmyra VFW, 4306 Route 31, Palmyra.
For the second straight year, the Humane Society is featuring celebrity items through an agency called Charity Fundraising. Last year, those items included an electric guitar signed by rock legend Bruce Springsteen. Everyone one of the celebrity items featured last year were sold, said auction organizer Cynthia Kukuvka.
While there are no Springsteen items this year, some legendary figures are once again featured, including a Dallas Cowboys helmet signed by a number of team greats, past and present, including Tony Romo, Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Jason Witten, Dez Bryant, DeMarco Murray, Charles Haley and Tony Dorsett.
Another “Star Wars” cast movie poster is available this year, and it includes the signature of the beloved cast member Carrie Fisher, who died in December. Others signing the poster include Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, David Prowse, James Earl Jones, director George Lucas and composer John Williams.
“We are truly excited this year to have many exceptional items,” said Mark Plyter, executive director of the Humane Society. “The Humane Society of Wayne County receives no government funding. Our operating budget comes from donations, fundraising and our fees for service. Without your help, we would not be able to make a positive difference in the lives of people and pets. Show your support and come on out for a great afternoon with great people.”
“Come join us for a fun-filled day and tons of items to bid on,” added Stephanie Cooper, president of the Humane Society’s Board of Directors. “Remember, all the proceeds from our auction benefit the animals of Wayne County. Bid high and bid often.”
Besides the Dallas Cowboys and “Star Wars” items, other celebrity pieces include “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz’s Snoopy animation art, an autographed 11-by-14-inch photo of Arnold Palmer, who died last year, and another of NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt Jr. There is also a Buffalo Sabres hockey puck signed by player Ryan O’Reilly.
Other auction items include art work, jewelry, a Laurel Burch panel, a champagne and chocolate basket, jewelry, food items, pet items, a golf package, gift baskets, vintage Barbie Dolls and much more. Many of the items can be viewed at www.hswaynepets.org
Auction viewing starts at noon. Silent bidding starts closing at 12:30 p.m., and every half hour after that, another section of items up for bidding closes. The live auction starts at approximately 2 p.m. Some items have reserve bidding (minimum price set by owner).
Raffles will be held throughout the afternoon. Admission is free. There is a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.
