Karlsen’s murder conviction stands

An appeals court has affirmed the Seneca County murder conviction of Karl Karlsen for killing his son in 2008.

In a decision posted on its website, the Fourth Judicial Department of state Supreme Court’s Appellate Division in Rochester upheld the second-degree murder count against Karlsen. He pleaded guilty to the charge in 2013 and was sentenced by Seneca County Judge Dennis Bender to 15 years to life in prison.

Karlsen admitted he caused a pickup truck on a wobbly jack to fall on his 23-year-old son, Levi, at Karlsen’s Yale Farm Road home in Varick. Karlsen left his son to die while he attended a funeral in the Penn Yan area.

Karlsen later collected on a $700,000 life insurance policy he took out on Levi weeks before his death.
