Canandaigua fire chief suspension: City alleges misconduct, incompetence

A clearer picture of the allegations behind the suspension of Canandaigua Fire Chief Mark Marentette emerged during roughly five hours of testimony at his civil service hearing.

The hearing is scheduled to continue Friday.

Marentette, who did not testify Thursday, was suspended without pay for 30 days in January. The suspension remains in place, although city officials said he now is being paid.

Canandaigua Corporation Counsel Michele Smith outlined charges against Marentette of misconduct, incompetence and insubordination that “reflects poorly and brings discredit to the city” during her opening statements Thursday.
