Renovations underway after Union Springs Academy fire in December

Students and staff are adjusting and renovations are taking place since a fire hit the Union Springs Academy’s administration building in December.

Principal Jere Clayburn said he estimates $250,000 to $300,000 worth of cleanup work has taken place at the building on 40 Spring St., which school personnel and students are still not allowed to enter. The blaze, which took place on Dec. 3, hit the Seventh-day Adventist boarding high school’s gymnasium, eight classrooms and 14 smaller rooms used for administration, storage and other purposes.

The cleanup work includes abating the extensive smoke damage and cleaning various parts of the building. He said insurance has covered most of the cost.
