Trial set for Farmington couple accused of animal cruelty

The Farmington couple arrested last year for their alleged role in the death of a former racehorse will have their case heard by a jury next week.

Terra Payne and Patrick Ryan, charged with animal cruelty under section 353 of the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law for allegedly failing to provide sustenance to the animal, face a potential year behind bars if convicted.

The trial is slated to begin in Farmington Town Court on Feb. 28 — nearly 13 months since the case was made known to members of law enforcement.

On February 3rd, 2016, Farmington resident Alexandra Hillegass adopted the horse, named Dancing Timber, which she said was suffering from malnourishment. The former racehorse came from a farm on Route 41 in Farmington, which is owned by Payne and Ryan.
