Seneca County board to look into body cameras for police

The first step toward buying 20 body cameras for members of the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office and Seneca Falls Police Department could happen Tuesday.

The Board of Supervisors’ Public Safety Committee will consider a motion to renew a contract with TASER International of Scottsdale, Ariz. The move would allow Sheriff and STOP-DWI Coordinator Tim Luce to purchase 10 body cameras for sheriff’s deputies and 10 for the Seneca Falls PD.

The cost of the contract would be $58,866 overall, including $16,410 for 2017.

If approved by the committee, the motion would go to the full board for final approval March 14.

Public Safety also will consider a motion to create and fill a full-time deputy position. The move is related to an increased call volume since del Lago Resort & Casino opened Feb. 1 in Tyre. The casino anticipated this impact in developing a mitigation plan and will provide $100,000 to the county to pay for the deputy’s salary and benefits.
