State Police Update on Friday
No life-threatening injuries. However, a few broken legs were reported.
According to State Police 34 vehicles were involved in Thursday’s pileup near the Warners Travel Plaza between exits 39 and 40.
The westbound lanes were closed for several hours. Altogether six people were injured. High winds and blowing snow were attributed to causing the crash.
Update: 3:30 pm
State Police report that the pileup, which shut down a large portion of the New York State Thruway has finally been cleaned up enough to allow for one lane of traffic through the area.
They report that there is still only one lane of traffic flowing through the area, but that it should be restored fully in the coming hours.
The investigation into the cause remains active. Although whiteout conditions were reported in the area at the time of the chain reaction pileup.

Update: 12:30 pm
State Troopers are calling the multi-vehicle crash that took place around 7:45 am on the New York State Thruway around the Warners Travel Plaza a pileup.
A spokesperson for the State Troopers said that they are working now to determine the number of vehicles involved. However, he did go as far as to call the entire accident a “pileup.”
The photos from the scene showed at least 10 vehicles, which ranged from tractor-trailers to cars and SUVs. The westbound stretch of the Thruway remained closed as crews investigated.
Officials didn’t go as far as to call the accident weather-related, but conditions in the area were slick and snow covered — as photos revealed.
As far as injuries are concerned, Troopers haven’t clarified how many injuries there were in the wreck. The spokesperson did say that there were confirmed injuries.
There was at least one other accident in the area of Warners in the eastbound lane. That section of the highway has been reopened, but there the police presence is significant in the westbound lane.
That westbound traffic is being diverted at Exit 39.

A serious crash involving several vehicles and tractor trailers shut down the New York State Thruway.
According to witnesses around 10 vehicles were involved and the crash happened around 7:45 am near the Warners Travel Plaza.
The Thruway’s westbound lanes are completely shut down between the I-690 exit (Exit 39) and the Weedsport exit (Exit 40). Westbound drivers must get off at Exit 39, according to the New York State Thruway Authority.
Roadways in northern Cayuga County and eastern Onondaga counties are snow covered and the Thruway is reporting snowy roadways between Waterloo and Syracuse.
Whiteout conditions were reported in the snowy Syracuse area as wind gusts reached 31 mph around the time of the crash, according to the National Weather Service.
