Newark’s Salvation Army store to stay in village

The Newark location of the Salvation Army will remain open through 2018 at least, officials announced yesterday.

“After numerous discussions with customers, employees, and community leaders, we are happy to have made the decision to stay,” said Jennifer Helpard, administrator of The Salvation Army’s Rochester Adult Rehabilitation Center, who oversees area Family Stores for the organization. “Everyone we’ve spoken to wants us to stay put, so we are hopeful the store can continue to be a staple in the community, as it has for half a century.”

It was late in December when village officials learned of the store’s planned closure on March 31st. Mayor Jonathan Taylor set out to see what he could do to keep the store in Newark.

“This is great news for our community and the communities around Newark,” Taylor said after learning that the popular thrift store would stay open. “So many want to support the mission of the Salvation Army, both through donations of goods, and by purchasing items.”

The Salvation Army Family Store at 235 Murray Street in the village of Newark is one of 11 in the Rochester area that funds the Adult Rehabilitation Center’s six-month program to help men who have lost everything to alcohol, drugs and other life issues.A staple in Newark for some 50 years, the store serves as a needed resource, and raises funds to support the rehabilitation center, which provides meals, lodging, counseling, work therapy, recreation activities and more to over 70 men at any given time.

The store is open every day, except Sunday, from 9:00am to 6:00pm and donations are accepted during regular store hours. Donors may also call 800-SA-TRUCK (728-7825) or visit SATRUCK.ORG to schedule a free pickup or find a convenient drop-off location near them.

Salvation Army officials said the store will remain open through 2018, but it is not out of the question that will remain open longer.
