Mynderse steamrolls Newark on way to Class B Sectional Championship

The Mynderse Academy and Newark varsity boys basketball teams split their regular season match-ups in Finger Lakes East play this season but the rubber match would come on the biggest of stages for Section V basketball, the Blue Cross Arena, with the Class B Championship on the line.

In a low scoring contest, Mynderse would grab a 12-9 lead after the first quarter of play and added to the lead by outscoring Newark 8-4 in the second period. The score at halftime was shockingly low at 20-13. The Mynderse defense continued to stifle Newark in the third quarter holding the Reds to just four points while Mynderse started to distance themselves from their opponents thanks to interior scoring from Jake Mein and a six-point third quarter from Mynderse senior guard Brett Anderson. In the final period, Jake Jones scored 8 as the Mynderse Blue Devils ran away from their East rivals for a 50-30 victory.

The Sectional Championship was the Blue Devils’ first since 2013. The Mynderse boys now join their girls varsity counterparts as Class B Sectional champs. Both the boys and girls advance to the state playoffs where they will face winner of East Aurora/Health Sciences in Class B Far West Regional on Saturday afternoon. The boys will play at Rush-Henrietta High School and the Lady Blue Devils will play at Buffalo State.

Senior center Jake Mein, named tournament MVP, was dominant in the win at the Blue Cross Arena finishing with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots despite picking up three fouls early in the second quarter. Seniors Brett Anderson and Jake Jones ended with 10 points each and junior Quentin Battle finished with 8. Battle and Anderson were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Newark’s Nate Beard and Taylor Clements.

Newark was led by Nate Beard with 10 points in his final game in a Reds uniform. Fellow senior Brian Sharp was held scoreless while juniors Ben Cowles, D’Andre Saunders and Taylor Clements would combine for just 7 points on the evening.

Mynderse held Newark to just 22% shooting on the game while Mynderse shot 37%. Only one three pointer was made all game, a third quarter trifecta by Nate Beard. Mynderse was  0-5 from beyond the arc, Newark was 1-12. At one point in the 4th quarter Mynderse led by 30  points before closing out the game up 20 and celebrating their school’s ninth sectional title.
