It came to as a surprise to some. Others were relieved.
On Friday, J.C. Penney named the 138 stores that would close due to poor performance, and a variety of other factors.
No location between Syracuse and Rochester was included in the list of cuts. In fact, only three stores overall were in New York.
A report last week indicated that due to a variety of factors, the location at Destiny USA could be on a short list to be closed. However, the company apparently had other ideas for locations in, and around the Finger Lakes.
In particular, the location at the Fingerlakes Mall seemed to be the ideal candidate for closure. A smaller store, in a small market — located in Aurelius — the J.C. Penney store at the Fingerlakes Mall seemed primed for closure in this recent re-evaluation.
The company says that they’re looking for locations that fit their long-term goals. Essentially, it means stores that can easily be flexed in an evolving market.
Overall, the 138 closures are due to a tidal change in shopping habits. Instead of shopping at stores, particularly at department stores, customers are shopping online — where a larger variety of deals and opportunities exist.
The future of the Fingerlakes Mall as a whole has been questioned a number of times in recent years — as stores have come and gone at the shopping center.
