Opening day: Stocked trout boost angler chances

Fishing enthusiasts who have been cooped up all winter will be out in force Saturday for opening day of trout season in New York.

Many of those hopefuls will flock to the banks of legendary Catharine Creek and other Finger Lakes tributaries for a shot at hooking a giant spawning rainbow trout.

For people who aren’t into standing elbow-to-elbow with other anglers or who don’t live near any wild trout streams, the state Department of Environmental Conservation offers an alternative. The DEC annually augments fishing opportunities by stocking hatchery-raised trout in designated waters statewide.
