Immigration order: Farm workers on the line

Border patrol agents last month detained a Geneseo mother and her brother for hours. Five farm workers were sent to a federal detention center after they were arrested on their way to trim apple trees. A Livingston County dairy worker with a Social Security number and a permit to work in the U.S. checked in by request at the Federal Detention Center in Batavia, only to be immediately detained.

In a high-profile case involving farmworker and community leader Dolores Bustamante from Sodus, a traffic infraction three years ago resulted in her recent detention. The Wayne County woman’s case is now stalled on technical grounds. “I present myself here with the pain inside as if I was being arrested,” Bustamante said last month at a rally in Rochester opposing detention or deportation of undocumented immigrants.
