Inside the Ontario County Courthouse’s South Courtroom last November, Brian Bagley was found guilty on a series of charges, including predatory sexual assault, for terrorizing a child for more than a decade.
On Friday afternoon, in the same courtroom, Ontario County Department of Social Services caseworker Tanya Buzalko was honored during the county’s annual Crime Victims’ Rights Ceremony for her efforts to work with the victim to uncover the years of abuse the child endured.
As the story goes, Buzalko typically served as an adult protective caseworker for the department, District Attorney Michael Tantillo told those gathered for the ceremony. However, in 2016, Buzalko, a 9-year veteran of the Department of Social Services, was asked to fill in for child protective services.
When Buzalko spoke to Bagley’s then teenage victim for the first time, it was her very first day working as a child caseworker and her very first case overall, said Tantillo.
