Discarded lawnmower blades, files, wrenches, horseshoes — if it’s made out of metal, Bill Alexander can find a new use for it.
That’s why a trip to the dump for the Gorham resident stirs a feeling of excitement typically felt by a child waking up on Christmas morning, according to his wife, Ann Marie Alexander.
“It is,” Bill Alexander said. “It’s like, this is someone else’s junk, but it’s not junk to me.”
Bill Alexander can take just about any piece of metal that’s been thrown away, and fashion it into a knife. It’s a hobby that he shared during the Gorham Public Library’s first “Man Cave Saturday.” Alexander led the event Saturday, showing attendees how to make a knife, while also talking about all of the various pieces of whatever he could get his hands on that he’s crafted into a usable blade.
