Expect to see some big equipment at work soon along a stretch of Routes 5 and 20 just west of Canandaigua Town Hall. A landowner donated an easement for construction of a wetland on three acres on the south side of the road about half a mile from Town Hall.
“It is amazing what wetlands can do to help the quality of the lake,” said Canandaigua Lake Watershed Program Manager Kevin Olvany.
The watershed covers 12 major municipalities and 350 miles of tributaries, providing a drinking water source for more than 70,000 people.
Restoring and creating wetlands is one of the ongoing projects of the Canandaigua Watershed Council and partners that include like-minded groups such as the state Department of Environmental Conservation, Nature Conservancy and others.
