Opinion split on tobacco age raise proposal

Keeping cigarettes out of the hands of youths is something everyone can agree on, but raising the minimum age for purchasing tobacco and related products may not be the most ideal way to handle the problem.

The opinion toward a proposed law which would raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21 in Tompkins County was mixed during a public hearing Tuesday at during a meeting of the Tompkins County Legislature. Out of the 12 people who spoke on the issue, seven disagreed with the proposed law.
