Risk for boaters elevated at Canandaigua Lake

Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero says that boaters need to use extreme caution when on the waters of Canandaigua Lake.

He said, “Officers are confirming debris below the surface, primarily tree limbs and logs, that present a danger if struck by a boat.”

The recent rains have wreaked havoc on the region, causing runoff, water rise, and a variety of other issues to be prevalent in lakes throughout the region. “Boaters are urged to observe reduced speeds as the lake is also very murky due to run off from the recent rains,” he continued. “Boaters are also urged to wear personal flotation devices at all times.  Estimated water temperature is 37 degrees. Hypothermia may quickly occur after only a short period of time of being in the lake water.”
