Were you one of the fortunate Penn Yan students who had Mr. Gillespie as an art teacher? You now have chance to rekindle the creative spirit that was so much a part of his classroom.
The Arts Center of Yates County is offering a workshop called, “Rediscovering Art with Bob Gillespie” on two consecutive Thursdays May 11 and 18 from 7-9 p.m.
In this beginner and rusty-artist friendly class, you will discover the fun of drawing, painting, and expressing yourself artistically with the beloved local artist and teacher.
Gillespie’s method of teaching art evolved from his unusual education. “I spent my first three years of college as an engineering student enrolled in Army ROTC,” he says. “However, I finished college as a Studio Art major with a minor in education. Needless to say, a high salary was not my primary goal. I was following my heart. My curriculum was self-developed, and became a smorgasbord or sampler of fairly short projects in a wide variety of media. It was ever-changing; evolving according to my varied interests in art, science, and history. It was eclectic and sometimes spontaneous, but always designed to be as entertaining as possible.”
