ORIGINAL REPORT ON 5/24/17:

Steuben County Sheriff James Allard has confirmed that an Investigator with the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a serious car accident Sunday morning.

He says that there were no witnesses, and the driver, identified as Seneca County Sheriff’s Investigator James Conkey was in his personal vehicle when it left the roadway, went through a ditch, and collided with an embankment.

Conkey was traveling north on Steuben County Route 13, according to Sheriff Allard. Conkey was also the sole-occupant in the vehicle.

Allard says that Conkey was airlifted from the scene to Strong Memorial Hospital. He suffered ‘severe trauma’ during the wreck, according to the Sheriff.

Allard added that the investigation is ongoing into contributing factors, but that it would not be completed until they are able to speak with Conkey.

At this time, his condition has not allowed him to be interviewed by deputies.

Sheriff Luce says that Conkey was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
