Auburn Correctional remains locked down, drone confiscated day before fight

The Auburn Correctional Facility was placed on lockdown this week, and remains locked down on Friday, according to officials.

The maximum security facility was locked down after a fight broke out, which involved at least 10 inmates. The fight happened on Tuesday around 10 pm in the south yard, and involved a large group of inmates who ignored orders to stop fighting.

Additional staff was called to the yard and an officer on the roof threw a gas canister into the yard. Pepper spray was also used on inmates to break up the fight.

All of the inmates were returned to their cells after the incident was stopped.

The day before the fight, officials at the prison say a drone was confiscated, which had camera capabilities. It’s not clear how or when the drone was flown into the facility, but that part is under investigation.

Officials say that two officers suffered minor injuries after another fight broke out later in the evening.

“The number of fights occurring as well as drugs still making their way into Auburn Correctional Facility is alarming,” stated Joe Miano, Western Region Vice President told WHEC.
